- PG&E: must have an active PG&E residential electric account; gas-only customers served by a municipal electric utility are not eligible.
- PG&E: a BEV or plug-in hybrid must be registered at the service address, and you must apply within 180 days of buying the charger.
- PG&E: one rebate per household; Rebate Plus requires household income at or below 80% of area median or a qualifying public assistance program, and pays the participating contractor directly.
- PG&E: choosing the Standard rebate rules out applying for Rebate Plus later. Funds are first-come, first-served.
Permits
In San José, a Level 2 charger at a single-family home or duplex needs an electrical permit (plus a mechanical permit if the maker requires ventilation). You can get it online at SJPermits.org and no plans are required (City of San José). Other Bay Area cities have their own building departments and fees.
Not yet verified:
- Installer response testing (who replies to quote requests) has not been done yet.
- The $303.48 permit figure comes from a third-party calculator; we have not yet matched it line by line to the city fee schedule.
- California state-level charger incentives were not checked for this page.
- Federal tax credit status for home chargers (30C) was not verified for 2026 installs.
- Silicon Valley Clean Energy (other Santa Clara County cities) offers a $250 GridShift charger rebate with conditions; not covered here because it does not apply in San José.
